A gradebook shows scores. It does not show that a student worked until midnight, cared for a sibling, or has no reliable ride.
Barriers that often stay hidden
- Work. Night shifts and family income needs can crowd out school.
- Caregiving. Students may be responsible for younger siblings or sick relatives.
- Housing instability. Moving or sharing space makes homework and sleep difficult.
- Transportation. A missed bus can turn into a missed day, then a missed week.
- Health. Physical and mental health needs may go unnamed.
What helps
Ask open questions, then connect the student with someone who can act: a counselor, a social worker, or a program adviser. Flexible schedules, credit-recovery options, and alternative settings can keep the diploma in reach.
