An empty seat tells us a student is absent. It does not tell us why.
When a student misses school, the most useful first question may be: What is getting in the way?
Transportation, family responsibilities, bullying, health, or the feeling that catching up is impossible can all affect attendance. A warning letter alone may never reveal the barrier.
Three ways to start
- Notice a pattern early. Reach out before missed days pile up.
- Listen without blame. Ask the student and family what is making attendance difficult.
- Agree on one practical change. Make a plan together, then follow up to see whether it helped.
Showing up matters. So does making school a place students can return to.
