Missing Work Is a Signal, Not a Character Flaw

Missing work: what is it telling you? Stopped suddenly: check life changes. One subject only: skill or relationship. Late, then never: a “too late” belief. Ask before assigning consequences.

A stack of zeros can look like a motivation problem. More often it is a signal that something else is going on: a skill gap, a demand at home, or a belief that catching up is not possible.

What missing work may be telling you

  • Work stops suddenly. Look for a recent change at home, at work, or with friends.
  • Work is missing in one subject. The barrier may be the content or the classroom relationship.
  • Work is late, then never turned in. The student may believe late work cannot earn credit.
  • Credits are falling behind. Each missed credit can make the graduation date feel further away.

Try this

Pick one high-value missing assignment and agree on a date with the student. A small, finishable task rebuilds momentum better than a long list of overdue work.
